ELEGANZA: 10 things we’re obsessed with this week
- No1. I’m Prancing as Fast as I Can by Jon Kinnally
Your new favorite “coming of gay” story just arrived. I’ve been waiting months for the debut memoir ($18.99 on Amazon) from queer screenwriter Jon Kinnally, who’s written for shows like Will & Grace and Ugly Betty. Unsurprisingly, I’m Prancing as Fast as I Can — which bears the hilariously hefty subtitle, “My Journey From a Self-Loathing Closet Case to a Successful TV Writer With Some Self-Esteem” — was as emotional and hilarious as his episodes I grew up watching.
From crazy fans to loss, Cher, and drag bunnies, Kinnally tells his own stories with heart, vulnerability, a “learn-from-my-mistakes” mentality, and a special foreword by Ryan O’Connell.

Obsessed with the Doan's Man
In the book When I Knew Robert Trachtenberg compiles poignant and often hilarious moments when gay men and women first came out to themselves.
Jon Kinnally, executive producer of Will & Grace, realized he was gay when he was 8 years old and felt a curious attraction to the illustration on a container of backache medicine. "I became obsessed with the man on the Doan's pill box," he remembers. "I thought his back was so sexy—it was a combination of this rugged muscle guy in pain and showing vulnerability. When my mother ran out of her supply and threw the box away, I went to the drugstore and stole another one."

Collaborative project with Charlie Welch
In the fall of 2021 Jon and Charlie began this project and it was a way to commit to staying creative and keep their imaginations active. Every Sunday from October 3, 2021 through September 24, 2022, Jon would send Charlie text and Charlie would interpret it through a photograph. At the same time, Charlie would send Jon a separate photograph and Jon would interpret it with words. They would have one week to complete both parts, as well as to prepare new work to send to each other. As a result There are one hundred and two collaborative dialogues.
